DSD FAQ

Here some answers to the most common questions about DSD:

What is Digital Smile Design?

It is a revolutionary digital technique that uses photography, dynamic videos, and the best available 3D software to record and analyze a patient in preparation for aesthetic restorative therapy.

Developed by Brazilian dentist Christian Coachman, the DSD aims to enhance communication of desired results:

  • For you, the patient, to pre-visualize, select, and approve the desired restored outcome.

  • For your dentist and their team to have a proper treatment plan to follow.

Who is the ideal DSD patient?

At our clinic, we employ DSD technology as a component of our restorative work for individuals who have lost or damaged all or a portion of their upper or lower teeth. Additionally, DSD is ideal for patients seeking to enhance the aesthetic appearance of their smile with which they are unsatisfied.

What does the initial DSD analysis involve?

The DSD process involves an analysis of your face and smile by your dentist, covering all aspects of facial aesthetics, facial symmetry, the position of the dental and facial midline, relating everything to the harmony and symmetry of the gingival and facial soft tissues. Additionally, your dentist will study your speech patterns and voice.

DSD technology and its tools are used to obtain a series of photographic images both inside and outside the mouth, a 3D scan of the face, and digital impressions of the upper and lower teeth. Dynamic videos are often used to record how your lips move to express emotions and natural smiles, not in artificial poses.

How DSD works?

After obtaining and analyzing all the images during your initial appointment, the proposed restored result will be designed and produced as a physical structure called a "mock-up."

This prototype of your new teeth is placed in your mouth, over your natural teeth, so that you can see the final result of the treatment plan before any work begins.

At this stage of the DSD process, you and your dentist will study your new smile together, as if it were after the treatment.

Furthermore, by testing your new smile, you will be involved in precision adjustments that concern the final design to ensure you achieve the desired smile.

After this, a treatment plan will be proposed, and all appointments will be scheduled.

How many treatments will I need?

Every patient will receive a highly personalized treatment plan. We offer a wide variety of treatments, and it will be your dentist's responsibility to determine which ones are necessary for you. Rest assured that your dentist will create a tailored plan that addresses your unique dental needs and goals.

My new smil will appear natural?

Absolutely! Our ultimate goal, using DSD technologies and the subsequent treatment plan, is to ensure we create a smile that is both natural and comfortable for you. Your satisfaction and comfort are paramount in achieving the desired outcome.

Which are the DSD benefits?

The result will be a naturally harmonious outcome, complementing your facial movements, morphological features, as well as age, gender, and genetic components. With meticulous attention to natural morphology, color, and proportionate distribution of your teeth, DSD aids in creating a "Perfectly Imperfect" smile that reflects your unique character and natural beauty. Additionally, another advantage is that by accepting the design before any permanent procedures, you will be more confident and informed about the treatments and outcomes, as you will see and confirm the proposed changes.
